Rajul Awasthi is a Senior Public Sector Specialist in the Governance Global Practice at the World Bank. He leads the tax policy and revenue administration workstream, primarily in the ECA region.
Previously, he has been a senior member of the Investment Climate Tax Team of the World Bank Group since 2008, leading business taxation programs in several countries in East Africa and South Asia, and as the Regional Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Before joining the World Bank Group, Rajul worked as an advisor to the Finance Minister of India from 2004-2008, a period characterized by unprecedented economic growth and major reforms. In his role there, he assisted the Finance Minister in macro-economic management, in initiating tax administration and tax policy reforms, and worked with the Investment Commission on developing India’s foreign direct investment policy.
He has been an officer in the Indian Revenue Service for 10 years where he held leadership roles in tax administration. Rajul has also worked in business strategy consulting, both in India (with Price Waterhouse), and the USA (William Kent International).
Rajul holds a Masters Degree in Economics and Public Policy from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India.
